This opportunity offers a two-year fixed-term contract at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg. Successful candidates will undergo training to earn a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, equipping them to enforce road traffic and public transport legislation, conduct vehicle and driver license testing, and promote road safety across the province.

Center: Traffic Training College, Pietermaritzburg during training. Upon successful completion of the Traffic Officer’s Diploma, candidates must be prepared to be placed at any RTI station across KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Enforce Road Traffic, Public Passenger, and Transport Legislation:
i. Implement planned traffic law enforcement activities.
ii. Ensure free flow of traffic through point duty and control in congested areas.
iii. Coordinate and safeguard accident scenes, identify and advise on hazardous locations.
iv. Participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations.
v. Issue notices, execute arrests under relevant Acts, and attend court proceedings.
vi. Escort abnormal vehicles/loads and coordinate overload control management.

Examine Drivers’ Licenses and Motor Vehicles:
i. Conduct learner and driver license tests.
ii. Conduct vehicle roadworthy tests.
iii. Monitor compliance at Driver License Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).

Provide Visible Traffic Control/Policing and Promote Crime Prevention:
i. Assist in planning visible traffic policing, provide motorist assistance, and execute escort duties.
ii. Participate in roadblocks and special law enforcement operations.
iii. Patrol roads and warn motorists at hazardous locations.

Perform Administrative Activities:
i. Maintain effective administrative procedures.
ii. Comply with the Firearm and Ammunition Act 60/2000.
iii. Adhere to operational plans.
iv. Participate in Human Resource Development Programs.
v. Promote effective service delivery and maintain a professional corporate image.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Senior Certificate or equivalent (NQF Level 4).
  • Valid Code B driving license (manual transmission).
  • No criminal record (SAPS clearance screening required).
  • Medical certificate (not older than 3 months) proving ability to perform strenuous exercise.
  • Full medical examination at State expense before appointment.
  • Applicants must be under 35 years old on the first day of enrollment.
  • South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be a fit and proper person.

  • Successful applicants will be appointed as Trainee Provincial Inspectors (R193,359 p.a.) for two years to complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma. Upon completion, they will transition to permanent Provincial Inspector (Level 6) with 12 months’ probation. Failure to complete the diploma results in termination.

  3. Undergo physical training.
  4. Bear arms and complete Firearm Control Act training.
  5. Complete an indemnity form for recruitment processes.
  6. Undergo alcohol screening (positive results lead to disqualification).
  7. Serve a minimum of 12 months in the Road Traffic Inspectorate after completing the diploma, or be liable for full course fees.
