What is the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme about?
The Masakh’iSizwe (MiS) Bursary Programme was established in 2006 by the Western Cape Government in order to make available cohorts
of trained professionals in the engineering and built environmental fields.
The MiS Bursary Programme awards external bursaries for studies at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Western Cape Province (WCP) for a field of study relating to a degree or diploma in the engineering and built environment or any other disciplines deemed to be scarce and critical by the Department of Infrastructure.
What does the bursary cover?
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation and
- Support programmes meals (or transport costs)
- All prescribed books and materials
Will I have to pay anything back?
The bursaries are offered on a work-back basis. In other words, you will have to work in the public service and/or partnered companies for one year for every year you have received a bursary. During your studies, there will be weekends when you are required to:
- Attend workshops, events and meetings
- Partake in outreach programme
- Undertake academic experiential training

Masakh’iSizwe offers bursaries for full-time studies towards a degree or diploma in the engineering and built environment disciplines, amongst others, includes:
- Architecture
- Construction Management
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
- Mechanical Engineering
- Quantity Surveying
- City and Regional Planning
- Geomatics
- Property Studies
Where can the bursaries be taken up?
- University of Cape Town
- Cape Peninsula University of Technology
- Stellenbosch University
Who can apply for a bursary?
- A South African citizen.
- Youth accepted or intending to study at a Higher Education Institution in the Western Cape.
- Preference will be given, but not limited to:
- Persons with disabilities, the financially disadvantaged, female learners and applicants from the Western Cape
