
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is inviting applications for two Public Relations/Communications Internship positions under the SETA Special Dispensation Programme. About the Internship
The internship provides structured workplace learning within the Advancement and Communications Department. Interns will participate in daily communication activities while receiving mentorship from experienced professionals.
The successful applicants will contribute to communication initiatives that support students, staff, alumni, prospective students, media stakeholders, and the broader community. Exposure to multiple areas of communications allows interns to develop a diverse set of professional skills that improve future employment opportunities.
During the programme, interns will become familiar with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of communication campaigns while assisting with university events and promotional activities.
Minimum Requirements

- Previous employment or internship experience in Public Relations or Communications will not be considered.
- Basic understanding of Public Relations and Communication principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel.

- Must be a South African citizen.

Duties and Responsibilities
Successful interns will assist with various communication and marketing functions within the university. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with interviews involving staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders.
- Researching and writing institutional news stories.
- Preparing content for the university website, newsletters, intranet, and communication platforms.
- Supporting marketing campaigns and brand awareness initiatives.
- Assisting with the planning and coordination of university events.
- Supporting student recruitment activities.
- Assisting during school outreach programmes and career exhibitions.
- Helping distribute recruitment information and promotional material.
- Capturing photographs and videos during university events.
- Assisting with promotional video production.
- Supporting the creation of documentary and interview content.
- Producing digital content for social media platforms.
- Assisting with website content updates.
- Supporting alumni engagement initiatives.
- Maintaining alumni database records.
- Coordinating communication with graduates.
- Assisting with social media campaign planning.
