Ndifuna Ukwazi: Law Internship 2026 (R13,500 per Month)

Ndifuna Ukwazi invites applications for a Law Internship (12 months) based in Cape Town, running from 01 June 2026 to 31 May 2027, with a monthly stipend of R13,500. The internship focuses on advancing constitutional rights and urban land justice through legal support, research, and community-based education. Responsibilities include case management and paralegal support in the Housing Clinic under attorney supervision, research for litigation and advocacy submissions, facilitation of educational programmes such as Advice Assemblies and Land and Housing School, development of accessible legal education materials, administrative support, and strengthening relationships with stakeholders including local courts and clerical staff.

Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU) is an activist organization and law centre that promotes the realization of constitutional rights and social justice through organizing, research, and legal support and representation for poor and working-class people, communities, and social movements. The organization advances urban land justice in Cape Town through the protection and expansion of access to affordable housing, support for tenants’ rights and security of tenure in both private and public housing, and efforts toward building a more just and equal city.
Ndifuna Ukwazi seeks to appoint a Law Intern for a 12-month contract based in Cape Town.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Case management and paralegal support in the NU Housing Clinic under the supervision of attorneys
- Conduct research to support litigation, submissions, and campaigns where required
- Develop and facilitate appropriate content for educational programmes such as Advice Assemblies and Land and Housing School
- Assist in developing popular education-style content for the NU Law Centre on common legal issues
- Provide general administrative support
- Maintain and strengthen the organization’s profile and reputation with key stakeholders, including local courts and clerical staff at facilities
Minimum Requirements
- Degree-level education or proven participation in relevant paralegal training
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills (additional language skills in isiXhosa and/or Afrikaans are advantageous)
- Strong work ethic, communication skills, and innovative thinking
- Proven ability to work well under pressure, independently and as part of a team
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to and work with people across race, class, gender, and age
- Self-motivated and productive
Preference Will Be Given To Candidates With
- Experience in or familiarity with land and housing rights
- Experience in a social justice, activist, or similar civil society organization
