Mahikeng Local Municipality invites applications from unemployed Mahikeng residents for temporary employment opportunities under the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP). The programme offers nine-month contract positions aimed at creating employment while supporting the delivery of essential municipal services across the municipality.

The recruitment process is conducted in accordance with the EPWP Recruitment Guidelines and Ministerial Determination 4 of 2012. Successful applicants will be appointed on a nine-month contract and will receive a stipend in line with the approved EPWP Ministerial Determination.

A total of 85 vacancies are available across three occupational categories, providing opportunities for applicants who meet the minimum Grade 10 or Grade 12 qualification requirements.

Available Vacancies
1. Road Brooming, Cleaning of Roads and Litter Pickers

Number of Posts: 67

Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 10 or equivalent qualification.
  • Must be an unemployed Mahikeng resident.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding duties.
  • Willingness to work outdoors under different weather conditions.
Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will assist in maintaining a clean and safe municipal environment. Daily duties include cleaning municipal roads, road reserves, sidewalks, parks, and other public spaces. The role also involves removing litter, clearing stormwater drains, cutting grass and weeds, maintaining municipal facilities, emptying public litter bins, and reporting illegal dumping activities. Employees may also assist with road maintenance activities whenever required.

Skills Required

Applicants should possess good communication skills, be able to work effectively within a team, follow instructions accurately, demonstrate reliability and punctuality, and maintain a strong commitment to environmental cleanliness. Knowledge of occupational health and safety will be considered an added advantage.


2. Data Capturers

Number of Posts: 5

Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Administrative experience will be an added advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will capture and update programme information, maintain participant records, compile attendance registers, prepare reports, organize and file documentation, and perform general administrative duties related to the EPWP programme. Accuracy and confidentiality will be essential throughout the appointment.

Skills Required

Suitable applicants should have excellent computer skills, strong attention to detail, accuracy when processing information, good communication skills, organizational abilities, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively under pressure while meeting deadlines.


3. Meter Readers

Number of Posts: 13

Minimum Requirements
  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Willingness to walk long distances daily.
Duties and Responsibilities

Meter Readers will read electricity and water meters, record readings accurately, verify customer information, report faulty or inaccessible meters, and submit daily meter reading reports according to municipal procedures.

Skills Required

Applicants should possess numerical ability, honesty and integrity, attention to detail, good communication skills, time management skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining high levels of accuracy.

Contract Duration

Appointments will be made on a nine-month temporary contract under the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP). The programme provides temporary employment opportunities while supporting service delivery within the municipality.

Salary and Benefits
