Purpose of the Job
The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programme for P1 and P2 Chemical Engineering learners is designed to provide hands-on, practical work experience over a one-year period. This programme aligns with university requirements and aims to equip learners with the skills and exposure necessary to complete their National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Chemical Engineering. Participants will work under the guidance of experienced mentors to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world chemical engineering processes within Impala Platinum Refineries.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Background: Completion of all theoretical modules required for a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering (NQF Level 6).
- Knowledge and Skills: A solid understanding of fundamental chemical engineering concepts, including but not limited to process design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mass transfer.
- Medical Fitness: Candidates must be medically fit to work in Base Metal Refineries (BMR) and/or Precious Metal Refineries (PMR) environments, as determined by a medical examination.
- Additional Requirements:
- South African citizenship or valid work permit.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude toward learning.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to a fast-paced, industrial environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be assigned specific duties and responsibilities by their mentor or coach, tailored to the requirements of their training institution and the operational needs of Impala Platinum Refineries. Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the monitoring and optimization of chemical processes within the refinery.
- Supporting the implementation of safety, health, and environmental standards in all activities.
- Participating in process improvement projects under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Conducting basic data analysis and reporting on process performance.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve operational objectives.
- Completing workplace assessments and logbooks as required by the training institution.
Where possible, tasks will be aligned with the specific competencies outlined by the candidate’s higher education institution to ensure compliance with WIL requirements.
