Food Science Graduate Internship – Elgin Free Range Chickens

Elgin Free Range Chickens invites interested and suitably qualified graduates to apply for the Food Science Graduate Internship within the Technical Department. The programme offers practical exposure to Food Safety and Quality Management Systems, regulatory compliance, audits, data reporting, and documentation control in a fast-paced abattoir environment.

The internship provides opportunities to support internal audits, assist with PRP inspections, collect and analyse FSMS data, participate in verification and validation activities, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. The role is designed to help graduates build technical capability, strengthen problem-solving skills, and gain valuable experience in food safety and quality operations.

Elgin Free Range Chickens is offering graduate internship opportunities within our Technical Department at the abattoir.

The programme provides hands-on experience in Food Safety & Quality Management Systems, regulatory compliance, audits, and data reporting.

Duties

  • Support the Technical team with internal audits, PRP inspections & trials.
  • Collect, process and trend FSMS & product quality data.
  • Assist with verification & validation activities.
  • Support with root cause investigations and corrective action follow-up.
  • Assist with maintaining, updating and streamlining Food Safety & Quality documentation.
  • Contribute ideas for process and product quality improvements and assist in implementing solutions.

Minimum Requirements

  • Required: BSc Food Science or BTech Food Technology degree graduate (or soon to graduate)
  • Strong interest in food safety, quality, compliance, and regulatory systems
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills
  • Diligent, organised and willing to learn in a fast-paced environment

Duration & Location

  • 12-month internship
  • Based at the abattoir in Grabouw
  • Monthly stipend provided
