ECPTA: Internship and WIL Programme 2026

The Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA) invites applications from students and graduates seeking practical workplace experience in the field of Nature Conservation. Applications are open for the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Placement Programme and the Graduate Internship Programme, both funded through CATHSSETA.

These programmes are designed to bridge the gap between academic studies and professional employment by providing participants with valuable practical experience in the workplace. The opportunities are ideal for individuals who have completed the required academic qualifications and are looking to gain hands-on experience while improving their employability in the environmental and conservation sector.

  • Position: Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Placement Programme and Graduate Internship Programme
  • Duration: 12-month programme
  • Stipend: CATHSSETA funded (stipend not specified)
  • Location: Eastern Cape
  • Closing Date: 17 July 2026 at 16:30

Both programmes will run for a period of twelve months and are intended to prepare participants for careers within the nature conservation and environmental management industries.

Work Integrated Learning Placement Programme (Nature Conservation)

The Work Integrated Learning Placement Programme is aimed at students who have successfully completed the two-year theoretical component of a Nature Conservation programme at an accredited higher education institution in South Africa.

Many diploma qualifications require students to complete practical workplace training before a qualification can be awarded. This programme provides eligible students with the opportunity to complete the practical component of their studies in a professional working environment.

Successful applicants will receive structured workplace exposure that supports academic learning while developing practical skills required in the conservation sector.

The programme is funded through CATHSSETA and forms part of efforts to develop skilled professionals capable of contributing to biodiversity conservation, protected area management, environmental education, tourism, and related fields.

Purpose of the Work Integrated Learning Programme

The primary objective of the programme is to provide practical workplace experience to students who have completed their academic theory but still require experiential learning to qualify for a diploma.

During the twelve-month placement, participants will have an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real working environments while learning from experienced professionals in the conservation industry.

The programme also assists students in developing workplace competencies, professional ethics, communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and practical technical knowledge relevant to Nature Conservation.

Minimum Requirements for the Work Integrated Learning Programme

Applicants interested in the Work Integrated Learning Placement Programme must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully completed the two-year theoretical component of a Nature Conservation programme at an accredited institution.
  • Provide an official Work Integrated Learning (WIL) letter from the higher learning institution.
  • Submit a certified copy of a South African Identity Document that is not older than six months.
  • Submit a comprehensive and updated Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Only applicants who meet all the minimum requirements should apply.

Graduate Internship Programme (Nature Conservation)

ECPTA is also inviting applications for the Graduate Internship Programme in Nature Conservation.

This internship is specifically intended for graduates who have already completed a full Nature Conservation Diploma at an accredited institution within South Africa.

The internship offers graduates an opportunity to gain practical experience after completing their studies. The programme enables participants to strengthen their professional skills, improve their understanding of workplace practices, and prepare for future employment opportunities.

Graduates often face challenges when entering the labour market due to limited work experience. This internship addresses that challenge by providing structured exposure to practical conservation work.

The internship is also funded through CATHSSETA and supports skills development within South Africa’s conservation and environmental sectors.

Purpose of the Graduate Internship

The Graduate Internship Programme aims to provide recent graduates with meaningful workplace experience that complements their academic qualifications.

Participants will have an opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals while applying theoretical knowledge gained during their studies.

The internship is intended to improve employability by exposing graduates to daily operational activities within the Nature Conservation environment.

Successful interns may develop valuable technical skills, workplace confidence, leadership abilities, and professional networks that can support future career opportunities.

These ECPTA programmes provide an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in Nature Conservation while working within an established organisation committed to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation.

Participants may gain exposure to conservation operations, protected area management, environmental education, biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem management, tourism support activities, and other practical functions depending on operational requirements.

The experience gained during the twelve-month programme can significantly strengthen future job applications and enhance career prospects within government departments, conservation agencies, environmental consulting firms, research institutions, and the broader environmental sector.

Students requiring workplace learning to complete their diploma requirements and graduates seeking practical employment experience are encouraged to take advantage of these funded opportunities before applications close.
