Job Summary:
CSA is offering an opportunity for individuals in Port Nolloth to help develop sustainable job opportunities linked to the ocean’s economy, specifically focusing on kelp and line fish research. The positions will provide hands-on training, skills development, and experience in nature-positive jobs which promote environmental sustainability and community resilience.
This programme will provide work placements for six individuals between the age of 18 and 35 years, who will help to build capacity withing the community fishing industry as part of CSA’s Oceans Programme which is being implemented along the Namaqualand Coastline. This placement would run for 11 months in total.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fulfil various duties within a Fishing Corporative in Port Nolloth, to assist in supporting and strengthening the local community fishing industry.
- Duties could include: data collection, data capture, reporting, financial and other administration, marketing and/or participation in wild kelp harvesting and line fish processing research and activities.
- Collaborate with local communities to promote environmental awareness and sustainable livelihoods.
As part of this learnership, you will be required to: - Attend training workshops on conservation practices, climate change mitigation, and sustainable fisheries management.
- Learn how fishing cooperatives are structured, how they operate, and their role in supporting local communities.
- Learn about the financial management and administrative duties of a cooperative.
- Learn how fish and seafood products are marketed and distributed, both locally and internationally.
Educational and Skills/Experience:
Required
- Strong interest in conservation, marine ecosystems, and community development.
- Willingness to support a local fishing cooperative as you learn and acquire new skills.
- Positive attitude and motivation to contribute to a sustainable blue economy.
- A team player who is wanting to work within the sustainable blue economy environment,
- Minimum requirement of a South African Grade 10, 11 or 12 (Matric) qualification.
- Willingness to work in physically demanding, outdoor environments.
- Ability to positively communicate with local community and other stakeholders.
- Commitment to learn from Cooperative members and participate in training programmes.
Preferred but not required
- Any qualification in environmental management and/or marine-related studies.
- Prior experience in fishing or related sectors.
