The Johannesburg City invites eligible students who reside in Johannesburg to submit their applications for the 2025 Social Development Student Internship Programme. This programme offers 18-month internships that are specifically designed to furnish vital workplace exposure needed for academic credentials or for hands-on training after graduation. These opportunities are open to the youth in the Johannesburg area who have not previously engaged in an internship programme pertinent to their field of study.

An internship programme is an intervention by the City of Johannesburg to address the growing demand by tertiary institutions for students to undergo on-the-job exposure, as a pre-requisite to acquire an academic qualification or as a requirement after the acquisition of an academic qualification to obtain experiential training. The City is committed to providing work-based training for students.
Internship Opportunity 1: Food Value Chain
Department: Social Development
Branch: Food Resilience Unit
Designation: Internship: Food Value Chain
Remuneration: R10,109.86 per month (Basic Salary, no benefits)
Location: Traduna Building
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 plus a degree/diploma in Agriculture Studies, Development Studies or equivalent (Qualification completed with minimum 360 credits)
- Only City of Johannesburg residents will be considered.
Primary Function:
Assist farmers to transform from primary agricultural practices into processed material and final value-added products. Support development of training, SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) standards, and HACCP certification compliance.
Key Performance Areas:
- Implement activities that increase smallholder agricultural production and market linkage.
- Identify and establish food/agricultural value chain opportunities within the City.
- Execute food value chain implementation plans that assist farmers with market access.
- Coordinate and collaborate with local partners.
- Plan and support agricultural market days in the regions.
- Support farmers and agro-processors.

Internship Opportunity 2: Youth Coordination

Branch: Targeted Beneficiaries Unit
Designation: Internship: Youth Coordination
Remuneration: R10,109.86 per month (Basic Salary, no benefits)
Location: Traduna Building
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 plus BA Degree in Development Studies / Social Sciences (NQF Level 7)
- Only City of Johannesburg residents will be considered.
Primary Function:
Implement and facilitate Youth Development Programmes and administer Youth Empowerment to ensure efficient and qualitative service delivery.
Key Learning Areas:
- Coordinate implementation of youth development programmes and initiatives.
- Administer Youth Development Programmes.
- Provide administrative support relating to unit and programme implementation.
- Liaise and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure integration in youth services as per CoJ policies and procedures.
Leading Competencies:
- Willingness to work after hours and weekends when required.
- Ability to effectively work with the public and community leaders.
Core Competencies:
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Word and Excel).
- Community Development practices.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written).
- Report writing and record keeping.
- Coordinating skills.
- This internship opportunity is applicable to youth in the Johannesburg communities, who qualify for this internship and have never participated in an internship programme before, except in circumstances where the internship programme was not relevant to the candidate’s course of study.
