Job Purpose

The Consultant: Occupational Health and Safety will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, auditing, and improving Occupational Health and Safety systems across the Africa Regions.

The position focuses on ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, company policies, and internal standards while reducing workplace risks through inspections, investigations, reporting, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The successful candidate will collaborate with internal business units, country consultants, regulators, contractors, and external stakeholders to maintain effective OHS programs throughout the organization.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform a wide range of Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities, including:

  • Monitor Occupational Health and Safety compliance across multiple workplaces.
  • Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and company standards.
  • Collect and review quarterly Occupational Health and Safety reports.
  • Escalate instances of non-compliance to relevant management structures.
  • Provide expert advice on Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID).
  • Conduct workplace inspections to identify hazards and potential risks.
  • Perform injury-on-duty investigations.
  • Review investigation findings and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct Occupational Health and Safety audits.
  • Prepare detailed audit reports with practical recommendations.
  • Participate in Occupational Health and Safety committee meetings.
  • Support the development and revision of Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist regional consultants in preparing annual Occupational Health and Safety plans.
  • Conduct research into Occupational Health and Safety best practices.
  • Promote ongoing Occupational Health and Safety awareness across the business.
  • Maintain Occupational Health and Safety information on SharePoint platforms.
  • Ensure contractors comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Audit contractor safety systems and documentation.
  • Monitor Occupational Health and Safety implementation at construction sites.
  • Verify contractor appointments, certifications, and legal compliance.
  • Attend workplace safety meetings when required.
  • Provide technical Occupational Health and Safety guidance to business units.
  • Assist with workplace risk reduction initiatives.
Occupational Health and Safety Process Management

The successful candidate will also manage and improve Occupational Health and Safety processes throughout the organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing Occupational Health and Safety reporting systems.
  • Sending quarterly reporting reminders.
  • Monitoring submission of compliance reports.
  • Compiling quarterly compliance statistics.
  • Supporting appointments of Managers, OHS Representatives, First Aiders, Fire Wardens, and Evacuation Leaders.
  • Assisting with Occupational Health and Safety training coordination.
  • Monitoring emergency evacuation exercises.
  • Reviewing changes in Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Maintaining legal compliance registers.
  • Supporting policy reviews.
  • Providing guidance on Occupational Health and Safety risks associated with projects, workplaces, and special events.
Reporting Responsibilities

Reporting forms an important part of this position.

The Consultant will be responsible for:

  • Preparing monthly Occupational Health and Safety reports.
  • Compiling quarterly risk management reports.
  • Reviewing compliance reports from country consultants.
  • Escalating outstanding compliance issues.
  • Preparing executive reports after country visits.
  • Producing ad hoc reports requested by management.
  • Presenting Occupational Health and Safety performance information to stakeholders.
Risk Management Responsibilities

Risk management remains one of the core functions of this position.

Key duties include:

  • Identifying Occupational Health and Safety risks.
  • Recommending practical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Supporting implementation of compliance frameworks.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promoting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting policy alignment across business units.
  • Recommending technical solutions for workplace safety.
  • Monitoring new Occupational Health and Safety technologies.
  • Keeping updated with industry developments and regulatory changes.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Responding to Occupational Health and Safety enquiries.
  • Supporting employees and business units with Occupational Health and Safety guidance.

  • Supporting awareness campaigns.
  • Participating in industry workshops and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • NQF Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or an equivalent qualification.
  • Incident Investigation Certificate or Diploma.
  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma.
  • Additional Occupational Health and Safety qualifications will be advantageous.
Experience Required

Candidates should have:

  • At least five years of Occupational Health and Safety experience.
  • Experience conducting Occupational Health and Safety audits.
  • Experience with workplace risk assessments.
  • Experience investigating workplace incidents.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Report writing experience.
  • Experience working with external Occupational Health and Safety stakeholders.
  • Experience within African regions.
  • Experience in banking, financial services, construction, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications.
