Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of this role is to support the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of health, safety, quality, and environmental management systems throughout the organization.

The Health and Safety Officer will ensure compliance with applicable legislation, company standards, and internationally recognized management systems including ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015.

The role also focuses on creating a proactive safety culture by conducting inspections, audits, investigations, training, and compliance monitoring across various operational sites.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of SHEQ functions, including but not limited to the following:

  • Implement health, safety, quality, and environmental policies throughout the business.
  • Develop, maintain, and update site-specific safety files.
  • Monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).
  • Ensure company procedures align with ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 management systems.
  • Conduct workplace inspections to identify unsafe conditions and unsafe work practices.
  • Perform internal safety audits and compliance assessments.
  • Carry out hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA).
  • Monitor corrective and preventive actions following inspections and audits.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Compile investigation reports with recommendations for improvement.
  • Conduct regular site visits based on operational requirements.
  • Maintain statutory registers and health and safety documentation.
  • Keep compliance files accurate and up to date.
  • Manage electronic SHEQ documentation stored on company systems.
  • Facilitate health and safety induction training for new employees.
  • Present toolbox talks and awareness campaigns.
  • Deliver internal SHEQ training sessions.
  • Promote employee awareness regarding workplace safety.
  • Monitor employee compliance with safety procedures.
  • Verify correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct contractor and subcontractor audits.
  • Assess subcontractor compliance before project commencement.
  • Participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness planning.
  • Coordinate evacuation drills and emergency exercises.
  • Liaise with auditors and regulatory authorities.
  • Support ISO certification audits.
  • Prepare SHEQ reports for management.
  • Report compliance trends, risks, corrective actions, and improvement initiatives.
  • Assist management in achieving safety objectives.
  • Promote continuous improvement throughout the organization.
Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements before submitting an application.

Educational Qualifications

Candidates should possess one of the following:

  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Related qualification in Health and Safety Management
Professional Certifications

Applicants must possess:

  • NEBOSH or SAMTRAC Certification
  • Registration with SACPCMP as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO)
  • Incident Investigation Certificate
  • HIRA Certification
  • Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office)
Required Experience

Applicants should have at least:

  • Minimum three years of Occupational Health and Safety experience.
  • Experience implementing workplace safety programmes.
