The Department of Defence is inviting interested and suitably qualified South Africans to apply for Food Services Aid and General Store Assistant vacancies within the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS). The Department of Defence has released further vacancies within the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS), covering Food Services Aid and General Store Assistant positions. These posts are based in the Free State, Gauteng, Northern Cape, and North West, and are open to applicants with a minimum of an ABET qualification. Food Services Aid – 3 Military Hospital, Bloemfontein

Location: 3 Military Hospital, Bloemfontein

Requirements: A minimum ABET qualification is required, with no experience necessary. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English, with basic knowledge of health and safety and food preparation and equipment. Willingness to work shifts, good interpersonal skills, and punctuality are essential.

Key Duties: The role involves operating kitchen appliances and preparing meals and snacks according to ration scales and the daily menu. Duties include assisting with dishing up meals and food preparation during field exercises, as well as cleaning trays in wards. The role covers laying out bed tables for clients, fetching food using a warming trolley, and checking food for special diets and correct portions before it leaves the kitchen. Serving tea or coffee, collecting dishes after meals, and returning trolleys to the kitchen are also required. Additional duties include washing clients’ water bottles and supplying fresh water daily, mopping the kitchen floor after each meal, washing cupboards and walls weekly, and ensuring diet lists reach the kitchen on time.

Important Application Notes

Closing Date: 24 July 2026 at 16h00. Applications received after this date, as well as faxed copies, will not be considered.

Applications must be submitted using Form Z83, effective from 01 January 2021, available at any Public Service Department office or through the DPSA website. Applications using an incorrect Z83 form will be disqualified. The form must be signed and dated, and accompanied by a detailed CV outlining qualifications, training, competencies, and experience. Certified copies of qualifications are only required from shortlisted candidates, submitted before the interview date and not older than six months.

Applicants applying for more than one post must submit a separate Z83 form and supporting documents for each position. Applying for multiple posts on a single form will result in only the first listed post being considered. Photostat or faxed copies of documents will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Successful candidates will undergo Personnel Suitability Checks, including criminal record, citizenship, financial and asset verification, and qualification and employment checks. Security clearance processes also apply. Shortlisted candidates will complete pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an Integrity Assessment, both of which are scored during the interview process.

Selected candidates will be appointed on a twelve-month probation period. Financial interests must be disclosed within one month of appointment. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful, as correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates only.
