Overview

An exciting internship opportunity is available at the Council for Geoscience for 20 Library Interns across multiple locations in South Africa. This 24-month programme is designed for individuals who are passionate about information management, digital preservation, and library services. The internship provides practical exposure to modern digitisation processes and the management of valuable information resources.

Interns will play a vital role in supporting the digitisation, organisation, and preservation of the Council for Geoscience’s information resource collections. This includes converting print-based materials into accessible digital formats, capturing accurate metadata, and assisting in enhancing digital access initiatives.

Internship Locations

Positions are distributed as follows:

  • Pretoria: 10 positions
  • Polokwane: 2 positions
  • Bellville: 2 positions
  • Pietermaritzburg: 2 positions
  • Upington: 2 positions
  • Gqeberha: 2 positions
Reporting Line

Interns will report directly to the Manager: Knowledge Management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the digitisation of library and publication materials
  • Organise, sort, and prepare physical resources for scanning
  • Capture and verify metadata in line with established standards
  • Ensure careful handling of fragile and valuable materials
  • Support quality control processes to maintain accuracy and completeness of digitised content
  • Assist with records management, including filing of both digital and physical materials
  • Provide general support to library and publications staff when required

Educational Requirements
  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • National Diploma in Library and Information Science, or Archives and Records Management, or an equivalent qualification
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or Archives and Records Management will be an added advantage
Knowledge and Experience
  • Basic understanding of library and information management principles
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Familiarity with digitisation processes will be advantageous
  • Exposure to scanning equipment or digital repositories will be beneficial
