Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, in partnership with Rand Water and the National Treasury, is inviting unemployed graduates to apply for the Graduate Internship Programme for the Built Environment. This programme is offered on a three-year fixed-term contract and aims to help young professionals gain practical experience in infrastructure development and related fields.

The programme forms part of the government’s initiative to strengthen the public sector’s ability to plan, deliver, and maintain infrastructure projects. Successful candidates will gain valuable hands-on work experience and practical application skills in various built environment disciplines.

Internship Positions Available

The following disciplines are available in the programme:

  • Electrical Engineering – 2 positions
  • Mechanical Engineering – 2 positions
  • Civil Engineering – 2 positions
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – 1 position
  • Town Planning – 1 position
  • Natural Science – 1 position
  • Construction Project Management – 1 position
Minimum Qualifications Required

Applicants must hold the following qualifications depending on the discipline:

  • Electrical Engineering: BEng / BSc Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering: BEng / BSc Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering: BEng / BSc Civil Engineering
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): BSc Geomatics / BSc Geo Informatics / BSc (Honours or Master’s) Geo Informatics
  • Town Planning: BSc Town and Regional Planning (Honours)
  • Natural Science: BSc Natural Science (Honours or Master’s)
  • Construction Project Management: BSc Construction Management Studies (Honours or Master’s)
Requirements

Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be South African citizens with a valid SA ID
  • Must be unemployed graduates
  • Must be under the age of 35
  • Qualification must be from an accredited university
  • Academic record must align with requirements for professional registration with statutory councils
  • A valid Code 08 driver’s licence will be an advantage
  • Registered as a candidate with relevant councils will be an advantage

Relevant statutory councils include:

  • ECSA
  • SAGC
  • SACPLAN
  • SACNASP
  • SACPCMP

  • Meet the performance standards required for professional registration

Shortlisted applicants will undergo:

  • Security clearance
  • Qualification verification
