An internship programme is an intervention by the City of Johannesburg to address the growing demand by tertiary institutions for students to undergo on-the-job exposure, either as a prerequisite to acquire an academic qualification or as a requirement after the acquisition of an academic qualification to obtain experiential training. The City is committed to providing work-based training for students.

This internship opportunity is applicable to youth in the Johannesburg communities who qualify for this internship and have never participated in an internship programme before, except in circumstances where the internship programme was not relevant to the candidate’s course of study.

This vacancy is open to all qualifying students in the Johannesburg Community for a period not exceeding 18 months.

Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
• Degree or National Diploma in Accounting or related tertiary qualification at NQF Level 7 or 6
• No experience required
• Only City of Johannesburg residents will be considered

Primary Function
Monitor and review the application of accounting procedures by core departments in capitalising, transferring and disposing fixed assets in the asset register. Monitor and enforce adherence of core departments to the application of the asset management policy to ensure that asset reporting and reconciliation of accounting transactions is accurate and properly supported. Facilitate the process of asset note preparation by ensuring that all core departments comply with submission and verification of asset requirements. Render supportive and advisory services to CoJ core departments regarding efficient asset controls, accounting policy and procedures application.

Key Learning Areas
• Perform activities associated with monitoring the application of accounting procedures to all transactions related to fixed assets
• Implement control procedures and the asset management policy including GRAP requirements to ensure that all work processed in the asset register complies with all control standards and policies
• Implement control stipulated in the business process documents to ensure complete recording of acquisition, the existence of assets together with conditions and status of all assets and projects acquired
• Analyse, review and process transactional input that forms part of the preparation of financial statements and the asset note disclosure
• Provide activities that ensure the Asset Monitoring and Accounting operations are well coordinated
• Continuously maintain relations and interaction that will ensure Assets Specialists skills are enhanced
