SHEQ Internship Programme 2026 – Council for Geoscience

Council for Geoscience (CGS) invites suitably qualified and motivated candidates to apply for the SHEQ Intern (x8) positions on a 24-month fixed-term contract. The internship offers a monthly stipend of R13 000 and is based across multiple offices, including Pretoria (4 positions), Bellville, Polokwane, Gqeberha, and Pietermaritzburg. Reporting to the Manager: Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality, the successful candidates will support compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations, and other relevant legal requirements while gaining practical workplace experience.
Under the mentorship of the CGS SHEQ Department, interns will assist with the implementation and administration of occupational health, safety and environmental systems, conduct workplace audits and risk assessments, monitor the use of personal protective equipment, and support hazard prevention initiatives. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, computer literacy, English business fluency, and a willingness to learn. Applicants must have Grade 12 and a National Diploma (NQF Level 6), preferably in Occupational Health and Safety, with a degree serving as an added advantage.

Overall Job Purpose
To ensure that the Council for Geoscience (CGS) carries out its duties in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, its Regulations, and other relevant legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Whilst learning and developing skills under the mentorship of CGS SHEQ Department staff, the successful candidates will:
- Assist in implementing Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHS&E) workplace plans.
- Support the administration of Occupational Health, Safety and Environment in the workplace.
- Assist in conducting OHS&E workplace audits.
- Support the monitoring of compliance with the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Assist in undertaking occupational hygiene and safety risk assessments.
- Assist in the effective implementation of risk and hazard preventative measures.
- Assist in promoting internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Participate in and attend relevant workshops and training.
- Assist the SHEQ Business Unit with administrative activities and ad hoc duties as required.
Behavioural Attributes and Required Skills
- Good interpersonal skills with a positive, can-do attitude.
- Willingness to learn and grow professionally.
- Computer literacy (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- English proficiency at business fluency level.
Educational Qualifications
- Grade 12; and
- National Diploma (NQF Level 6), preferably in Occupational Health and Safety.
- A Degree will be an added advantage.
