Knysna Municipality: Internship Programme 2025

Knysna Municipality invites suitably qualified female applicants from the Garden Route District to apply for the Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP). This opportunity offers practical training and work experience in local government financial management, with a focus on finance, internal audit, and risk management, under the guidance of the Municipal Finance Management Act. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced National Diploma in Accounting, Business, or Finance and demonstrate strong communication and computer skills. Suitably qualified individuals are invited to apply for the Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) to gain practical experience in Local Government Financial Management. This National Treasury initiative aims to build capacity and train young graduates for a career in Local Government.

Internship Overview

The MFMIP is a structured professional training and work experience programme designed to provide high-quality training and practical exposure in all aspects of a Municipal Budget and Treasury Office. The programme is governed by the Municipal Finance Management Act, No. 56 of 2003, and its underlying reforms. It follows a logical training sequence that builds on skills and competencies acquired during tertiary education, culminating in a qualification in Municipal Finance Management as per the Municipal Regulations on Minimum Competency Levels, Gazette 29967 of 15 June 2007.

Key Internship Initiatives
  • Achieve specific learning outcomes outlined in the National Treasury Finance Intern Skills Development Programme.
  • Receive training primarily in the key areas of Finance, Internal Audit, and Risk Management to develop adequate skills.
  • Gain exposure to the implementation of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP) Standards, and related policies and procedures.
Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have matriculated in the Garden Route District (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Hessequa, or Kannaland).
  • Hold a completed three-year Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced National Diploma (NQF Level 7) with majors in Accounting, Business, or Finance.
  • Additional qualifications or experience in Internal Audit and/or Risk Management will be considered an advantage.
  • Demonstrate reasonable written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess computer literacy.
Conditions of Internship

The successful applicant will be required to sign an Internship Agreement in addition to the employment contract. This agreement ensures commitment to the MFMIP, which includes full participation in training and workplace programmes. Interns will be subject to the Municipal Disciplinary Code. An annual increase, as determined by the South African Local Government Bargaining Council, will apply.
