Affirmative Action and Employment Equity:
- The DBE emphasizes promoting equity in line with its Employment Equity Plan, prioritizing the filling of numeric targets.
- Applicants are required to indicate their race, gender, and disability status to facilitate this process.
- Preference is given to underrepresented groups as per the DBE Employment Equity Targets.
- Women and people with disabilities are explicitly encouraged to apply, aligning with affirmative action goals to address historical imbalances in employment.
Response to Affirmative Action Employment
The DBE’s Internship Programme strongly aligns with South Africa’s Employment Equity Act and affirmative action policies, which aim to redress historical inequalities in employment by promoting fair representation of designated groups (e.g., Black individuals, women, and people with disabilities). By requiring applicants to indicate their race, gender, and disability status, the DBE ensures that hiring decisions can prioritize underrepresented groups to meet its Employment Equity Plan targets. This approach is consistent with South African labor legislation, which encourages proactive measures to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
The explicit encouragement for women and people with disabilities to apply reflects a targeted effort to address gaps in representation within the education sector. The programme’s broad range of fields also ensures opportunities for diverse skill sets, further supporting inclusivity across various professional domains.
