South African National Parks (SANParks) is thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for 25 enthusiastic and environmentally conscious youth to join the Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme as Environmental Monitors within the Biodiversity Social Projects Environmental Monitor Programme at the iconic Kruger National Park (KNP). This Fixed-Term Contract (FTC) initiative, running under the YES Programme, offers a unique chance for young South Africans to contribute to conservation efforts while gaining valuable skills and experience in one of the world’s most renowned wildlife reserves.
Please note: Successful candidates will be engaged through the YES Programme and not directly employed by SANParks. Kruger National Park will serve as the working environment, providing a dynamic and inspiring backdrop for this transformative experience.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitoring Programmes: Participate in biodiversity monitoring activities, such as wildlife tracking, vegetation surveys, and data collection to support conservation research and management.
- Environmental Education: Engage with communities, schools, and visitors to raise awareness about environmental conservation, sustainable practices, and the importance of protecting South Africa’s natural resources.
- Area Integrity and Patrols: Conduct regular patrols to monitor the park’s infrastructure, ensure area integrity, and address issues such as illegal activities, fence maintenance, or environmental threats.
- General Administration: Assist with administrative tasks, including report writing, data entry, and coordination of project activities.
- Ad Hoc Duties: Support other park operations as needed, contributing to the overall functioning of Kruger National Park.

Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the YES Programme Environmental Monitor positions, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Age: Be an unemployed South African youth aged 18 to 35.
- Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
- Education: Hold an NQF Level 4 (Grade 12) qualification or equivalent.
- Previous Participation: Must not have previously participated in a YES Programme.
- Interest: Demonstrate a keen interest in environmental issues and conservation.
- Physical Fitness: Be in good physical health to handle the demands of fieldwork, including patrols and outdoor activities.
- Availability: Be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours duties, as required by park operations.
- Criminal Record: Have no criminal record.
- Residency: Reside within a 40km radius of Kruger National Park, as no accommodation is provided within the park.
