The SAMRC Unit and the SARChI in Phytomedicine has full-time (40 hours per week) internship
positions available for TUT Life Science graduates interested in working in a laboratory research
environment. The Interns will be required to broadly provide assistance to the Chair and Director for a period of 12 months.

Specific key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide assistance to postgraduate students, technical and research staff on specific experimental techniques and the use of specialised laboratory equipment.
  • Responsible for stocking of laboratory reagents and consumables .
  • Report and follow up with the Technical Service Department of electrical, computer or plumbing issues.
  • Initiating purchase orders in compliance with research group ordering procedures .
  • Maintain general laboratory and safety compliance ensuring bench tidiness and cleanliness of laboratory areas, including the correct disposal of liquid and solid chemicals and
    biohazardous materials.
  • Ensure correct recording and storage of plant material, voucher specimens and keep updated logs .
  • Monitoring the optimum operation of laboratory equipment and scheduling maintenance .
  • Perform any additional duties as required by the Research Chair and/or the Senior Analysts.

Minimum Requirements

  • Postgraduate Diploma or Honours degree (NQF level 8) in Life Science, Health Science or a related field, such as Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology etc
  • A Masters degree is an added advantage
  • Prior experience in chromatography, mass spectrometry and extraction procedures is also an advantage

Skills Required

  • At least 1 year experience working in a laboratory.
  • Knowledge on the use of chemical substances, safe laboratory practice, and health and safety regulations.
  • High level of technical competence and ability to multi-task to meet all research needs.
  • Operation of specialised equipment, requiring specialist training.
  • Ability to organise own workload, work as an individual and part of a team.
  • Good communication, training and computer skills.
  • Good English verbal and written communication skills
